reviews, ramblings, and real life
View this post on Instagram . Have you read a book that just felt so unique? Unlike anything you had read before? Lovely War by Julie Berry was that book for me. . SIDE BAR: I was horrible at Latin in High School. So much so, that my teacher allowed me to teach the class about Greek and Roman myths to earn extra credit. Watch me butcher their names in this video 😂 . Told by Aphrodite, goddess of love, Lovely War tells the story of four mortals involved in World War I. It’s 1942, the height of World War II, and Aphrodite is on trial for adultery with Ares, god of war, by her husband, Hephaestus, god of fire. Hephaestus captures Ares and Aphrodite and offers her the chance to explain herself or be taken to Mt Olympus for trial. She takes the opportunity to explain herself by sharing a story of her best work...the story of Hazel, James, Aubrey and Collette. . Hazel and James meet (thanks to influence from Aphrodite) at a dance, days before he is to depart for the Western Front of the war. What follows is a whirlwind romance derailed by the realities of war. Forced to be separated, each of their lives are pushed together but also our through the wringer thanks to others gods. . While James is at war, Hazel volunteers with the YMCA and meets Collette, a Belgian who lost everyone she loved to the early parts of the war. While volunteering, they meet, befriend, and Collette even falls for, Aubrey, a black musician serving in the American military. Aubrey’s story shares lots of reality surrounding the sacrifices and discrimination the black soldiers faced during such a selfless time. Collette and Aubrey are forced apart from each other due to racism and war. . I truly loved this book and how it was set up was incredibly surprising. These were fully developed and truly heart-wrenching and heart-warming stories that are steeped in historical detail; many of the supporting characters are real individuals in history. And Julie Berry includes a ton of historical notes at the end. . If I could give this book 10,000,000,000 stars, I would, but alas, I have to give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and title as one of my favorite books ever. . Let me know if you have read this, and what you think!
