reviews, ramblings, and real life
View this post on Instagram . . This year for my annual book goal of “Read a YA Series I Have Been Avoiding” I chose The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. Everyone was pitching The Mortal Instruments and I was like “nah”, but when @kimloveslibros told me they were set in Victorian era London I WAS SOLD, because guys, British Victorian literature is my jam. Let me tell y’all, this series was good. I also need to say, I’m not here for the Shadowhunter world. I’m here for the incredible setting and the characters. I genuinely wasn’t even concerned with the actual plot driving the series. Tessa Grey has come to London from NYC to live with her brother, but when she arrives she is immediately kidnapped and thrust into a world so unfamiliar to her...a world of Downworlder daemons and angelic Shadowhunters who have sworn to protect the world from Downworlder evil. Tessa is accidentally rescued by charming Shadowhunter Will and brought to their safe haven, the London Institute, where she is protected by a group of London Shadowhunters, including Will’s parabatai (basically non-romantic soulmates who would lay down their lives for the other), Jem, who is dying slowly from an encounter with a daemon. Cassandra Clare has written such an excellent group of characters with a setting that is so rich in detail and you can tell that Clare has massively researched the time period her characters were placed in. She also has brought us the ultimate love triangle. I’m team Will. But also team Jem. And team Tessa. And team Tess and Will and Jem. And team Will and Jem. I will say that I sometimes felt Tessa’s love for Jem wasn’t as passionate as it was for Will and almost felt secondary. But how Clare ends their story (at least in this series because all of the Shadowhunter series overlap) is sure to make ANY TEAM HAPPY. I highly recommend this series (and it’s AUDIOBOOKS) and am excited to finally be apart of the Shadowhunter fandom. Tell me your favorite parts of these books and give me all of the details from the other books! A post shared by Kaylee | Literary Pengwyns 🐧 (@literarypengwyns) on Aug 1, 2019 at 8:27am PDT
