reviews, ramblings, and real life
View this post on Instagram . . Oh guys...here we go. I read #Artemis by #AndyWeir and although it was SUPER CRINGEY, I didn’t hate it. And when I say cringey, I mean...holy cow, that dialogue 🤦🏻♀️ Let me preface with the fact that I’ve never read The Martian, even though I own it and my husband has read it. So I didn’t know anything about Weir’s writing style. I’m so glad Kimberly at @spacetoread encouraged a group of us to read it together for her #greatspaceread. It was so much fun to discuss it with others as we read along! Quick plot summary: Jazz lives on the moon in the colony of Artemis and grew up with her father, a welder. She has grown to distance herself from him and has one foot in the black market, as she is a porter who snuggles in contraband from Earth. One day, she is presented with an offer for a ton of money to blow up a competitor’s business and as she takes on the job, everything blows up (literally) in her face and she finds herself trying to stay alive in a place where there isn’t much room to run and hide. We read it in three parts and my assessment of the book is as follows: it was essentially three different books. First section: think high budget bro movie with cringey dialogue and slapstick humor. Second section: think high budget mob movie...lots of action and trying not to die. Third section: think low budget Ocean’s 11, where we work with the bad guys and have a motley crew of people all trying to pull off a heist. Overall, the book wasn’t bad. The plot was okay, but the world of Artemis, a colony on the moon, was amazing. There was so much science in this book and it blows my mind that Andy is able to create such realistic situations with something that doesn’t already exist. Once I got over how HORRIBLE our main protagonist’s inner and outer dialogue was, I started to enjoy it. The end was a bit rushed, but guys, it’s being made into a movie and it’s going to be a fun one. Have you read this book? Let’s talk! I need to know what you think, because my goodreads friends have this as a certifiable crapshoot. A post shared by Kaylee | Literary Pengwyns 🐧 (@literarypengwyns) on Jul 30, 2019 at 11:43am PDT
